Chandigarh, September 30
Amid resignation rumors, BJP’s Punjab chief Sunil Jakhar skipped a key party meeting in Chandigarh, fueling speculation about his future in the party. The meeting, led by state in-charge Vijay Rupani, aimed to strategize for the upcoming Panchayat elections. Rupani dismissed the reports, clarifying that neither Jakhar has resigned nor has the party received any official resignation. He explained that Jakhar is in New Delhi for personal reasons.
Despite these assurances, sources in Delhi indicate that BJP’s national leadership is considering replacing Jakhar due to dissatisfaction with outcome of the recent assembly elections held in the state. Insiders suggest he has been asked to stay on until a successor is found. According to party insiders, Jakhar is also unhappy with the internal functioning of the state BJP, particularly after the promotion of Ravneet Singh Bittu, a former Congress leader, to Union Minister. Bittu, who joined BJP in 2024, has seen rapid growth within the party, which has reportedly annoyed Jakhar.
Jakhar has not yet commented publicly on the issue so far. Amid rumors of his resignation, BJP Punjab chief Sunil Jakhar met with BJP national president J.P. Nadda on Friday to clarify his position, according to the party sources.
