External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will issue a statement in Parliament on Thursday regarding the deportation of 104 Indians from the United States, who arrived in Amritsar a day earlier. The deportees alleged they were subjected to inhumane treatment, including being handcuffed and shackled during the flight. The deportation sparked protests in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, forcing adjournments as opposition leaders demanded government accountability.
Jaishankar informed the House that he had discussed the matter with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who announced that the minister would address the issue at 2 pm. The deportees, including 13 children, were flown on a U.S. military C-17 transport plane from San Antonio, Texas, landing at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at 1:59 p.m. Officials from the police and civil administration were present at the airport.
According to the reports, the highest number of deportees hailed from Gujarat and Haryana (33 each), followed by Punjab (30), Maharashtra (3), Uttar Pradesh (2), and Chandigarh (2). AAP Punjab chief Aman Arora questioned why Amritsar was chosen as the arrival point despite the deportees being from multiple states.
The deportation follows a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants initiated by US President Donald Trump.
