External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar today met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday as part of a collective call by Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The meeting comes at a time when relations between the two Asian powers remain delicately poised following years of border tensions.

In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, Jaishankar said he conveyed greetings from Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Xi. He also briefed the Chinese leader on what he described as “the recent development of our bilateral ties,” and underscored the importance of “the guidance of our leaders in that regard.”

The interaction, though brief, assumes significance in the backdrop of continuing efforts by both countries to stabilise relations that have been strained since the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. While no bilateral meeting was announced separately between Xi and Jaishankar, Jaishankar’s remarks suggest an attempt to maintain diplomatic continuity and political dialogue at the highest levels.
