Former Himachal Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has accused the Congress government of burdening the public by increasing taxes on cement, a move that has raised prices by about ₹6 per bag. Speaking in Shimla at a BJP Minority Morcha event on Monday, Jairam Thakur contrasted the state government’s move with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to reduce GST on cement from 28% to 18%. He said the central government had aimed to provide relief, while the state’s decision had only added to people’s hardship. He  described the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu administration as a “government of closures,” alleging that more than 2,000 institutions had been shut. He claimed that while the Congress had promised jobs, it was eliminating posts in various departments under the guise of rationalisation, leaving unemployed youth betrayed. The BJP leader said the public was beginning to feel it was a “mistake” to bring Congress to power, accusing the government of making life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens.
