Shimla, May 26
Himachal Pradesh Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur has launched a scathing attack on Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, following the High Court’s decision to hand over the probe into the Vimal Negi death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Addressing a press conference in Shimla, Thakur welcomed the court’s decision and alleged that the state government was “neck-deep in corruption” and had “completely failed” in maintaining law and order. He said Chief Minister Sukhu should resign on moral grounds.
“The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that a sitting Superintendent of Police (SP) is publicly levelling serious allegations against his own Director General of Police (DGP) in the High Court. This reflects the complete breakdown of discipline in the police force,” Thakur said.
The BJP leader questioned the conduct of the Shimla SP, who allegedly accused the DGP of attempting to influence the case and tamper with evidence. Thakur said such internal clashes within the police hierarchy were “unprecedented” and pointed to a systemic failure enabled by political protection. “If the SP wants to enter politics, he should resign and contest elections. Police is a disciplined force. Making public allegations against the DGP in court and continuing even after being rebuked by the judges is shocking,” he added.
Thakur also accused the government of shielding corrupt officers. “The DGP has filed a report in court stating that evidence was being destroyed – and this couldn’t have happened without government support,” he alleged.
Referring to the suspension of ASI Pankaj, who is reportedly under threat, Thakur said the police leadership was collapsing under political pressure. He also criticised the Advocate General for holding a press conference alongside the SP, during which they allegedly contradicted the court’s orders. “This is not just misconduct, it is contempt of court,” Thakur said, warning of legal consequences for those attempting to undermine judicial decisions.
He further alleged that the broader issue reflects deep-rooted corruption in the state-run Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL), claiming that the government had failed to take action against corrupt officials and was instead protecting them.
While the cause of death remains uncertain, Thakur insisted that BJP had always suspected foul play and now welcomes a neutral investigation by the CBI.
