Israel on Tuesday announced that it had killed Iran’s newly appointed wartime Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Ali Shadmani, in an overnight airstrike targeting a command centre in central Tehran. The Israeli military identified Shadmani as the highest-ranking officer in Iran’s armed forces and a central figure behind the regime’s strategic military planning against Israel.
The strike, carried out by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) based on what officials called “precise intelligence,” targeted the “Khatam al-Anbiya” emergency command centre, which oversees Iran’s combat operations and strategic military planning.
According to a statement released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Shadmani had been named to the top role just days ago following the death of his predecessor, Alaa Ali Rashid, in the opening phase of Israel’s Operation Rising Lion. The operation, launched amid heightened regional tensions, has focused on dismantling what Israel sees as Iran’s offensive military infrastructure.
The IDF said Shadmani commanded both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular Iranian army, and was “the closest figure” to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Prior to his promotion, Shadmani had served as Deputy Commander of the emergency command and head of the Operations Directorate of Iran’s General Staff.
His elimination, Israeli officials claimed, represents a “critical blow” to Iran’s military leadership and disrupts its strategic command capabilities. There has been no immediate response from Iranian officials, and the full extent of the damage caused by the strike remains unclear.
