India’s largest airline, IndiGo, on Tuesday announced the appointment of former British Airways chief William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Walsh, a veteran in the aviation industry, is currently serving as the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). According to the airline, his tenure at IATA will conclude on July 31, and he is expected to join IndiGo no later than August 3, subject to regulatory approvals.

The development comes less than three weeks after the sudden exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers.

Popularly known as Willie, Walsh has previously served as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of airlines such as Aer Lingus, Iberia, Level and Vueling.

Welcoming the appointment, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline is entering a new phase of transformation and growth. He described Walsh as an accomplished aviation leader with extensive global experience, strong operational expertise and a customer-focused approach, making him well-suited to lead the airline at a crucial stage of its expansion.
