India’s renewable energy sector recorded significant growth between December 2023 and December 2024, with installed capacity reaching 209.44 GW, a 15.84% increase from the previous year, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said in its latest report. In 2024, India added 28.64 GW of renewable capacity, a 119.46% rise compared to 13.05 GW added in 2023. Solar power led the charge, contributing 24.54 GW, a 33.47% jump from its installed base of 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024. Wind energy followed, with an additional 3.42 GW boosting total capacity to 48.16 GW, reflecting a 7.64% growth.
Other renewable sources also showed progress. Bioenergy grew by 4.70%, reaching 11.35 GW, while small hydropower saw a modest 2.20% increase to 5.10 GW. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the strides made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Panchamrit’ goals, aiming for 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. “This growth underscores India’s commitment to clean energy targets, climate goals, and energy security,” the MNRE said.
