In response to an urgent call for help, the Indian Navy has dispatched a specialised team to assist in the rescue of miners trapped in a mine in Umrangso, a remote industrial town in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The team, comprising one officer and eleven sailors, includes trained Clearance Divers skilled in deep-water diving and recovery operations.
The body of one of the nine miners trapped in a ‘rat hole’ coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was recovered by an Indian Army diving team on Wednesday. The miners had been trapped after heavy rains caused water to flood the 300-foot-deep illegal mine in Umrangso on Monday. Sources indicated that the water level inside the mine has reached approximately 100 feet.
Equipped with advanced gear like deep diving equipment and underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), the team is fully prepared for the critical mission. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the team’s arrival yesterday, flown in by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in a closely coordinated airlift. The operation is being conducted in collaboration with the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local civil authorities. Regular updates and information are being exchanged between all agencies to ensure a swift and coordinated rescue.
The Navy’s commitment to providing prompt assistance underscores its resolve to safeguard lives and support the nation during crises, the Defence Ministry said.
