India is set to adopt the use of Automated and  Intelligent Machine-Aided Construction (AIMC) technology in National Highway projects to improve quality, safety, and efficiency, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said. Gadkari highlighted the successful pilot project on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, where GPS-aided motor graders, intelligent compactors, and stringless pavers were used. Based on its evaluation, NHAI plans to roll out the technology to more Greenfield Expressways and access-controlled corridor projects. Speaking at a stakeholder consultation workshop organized by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in New Delhi, Gadkari said that highways are national assets, and contractors’ accountability is being strengthened to ensure quality and transparency in construction.

Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta said India has made significant strides in road infrastructure and that real-time monitoring with AI, sensors, and satellites would be key to aligning development with Vision 2047. MoRTH Secretary V Umashankar stressed that time and quality are critical factors in road construction, and AIMC can help address compaction challenges. Senior officials from MoRTH, NHAI, NHIDCL, and technology firms attended the workshop.
