Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey met with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, in New Delhi to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in mineral exploration and mining. The talks focused on securing critical minerals vital for economic and industrial growth in both nations. Sri Lanka’s vast graphite and beach sand mineral reserves were highlighted as key resources for clean energy, battery technologies, and high-tech industries. Dubey emphasized India’s National Critical Mineral Mission, which aims to secure essential raw materials such as lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Discussions included granting mining rights, international partnerships, and encouraging Indian companies to invest in Sri Lanka’s mineral sector.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) expressed interest in conducting mineral assessments in Sri Lanka, with the potential for exploration on a Government-to-Government (G2G) basis. Sri Lanka requested India’s support in developing its beach sand and graphite resources.
Both sides also reviewed progress on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mineral cooperation. Dubey expressed confidence that the agreement, once finalized, will enhance collaboration in capacity building, mining exploration, and advanced mineral processing. He reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka through skill development, knowledge exchange, and technological assistance.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both leaders agreeing to fast-track agreements and explore new avenues for collaboration in the mineral sector.
