New Delhi, September 30
India has been re-elected to Part II of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), securing a stronger mandate than in the previous 2022 elections. The elections held on September 27 during the 42nd ICAO Assembly session in Montreal. Part II of the council is made up of states providing key facilities for international civil air navigation. The Officials said India’s improved vote share reflected growing confidence among member states in its leadership and commitment to global civil aviation. Ahead of the vote, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu hosted envoys in New Delhi earlier this month to canvass support. The Ministry of External Affairs also carried out diplomatic outreach, while India’s representative at ICAO headquarters engaged in lobbying efforts.
During his Montreal visit, Naidu held bilateral meetings with member states and industry stakeholders, highlighting India’s role as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. India, a founding ICAO member since 1944, has been on the council continuously for 81 years. The country has pledged to use its new three-year term to strengthen aviation safety, security and sustainability, promote equitable air connectivity, advance technology and innovation, and support ICAO’s No Country Left Behind initiative. The ICAO Council, which functions as the UN aviation agency’s governing body, has 36 members elected by 193 signatory states of the Chicago Convention.
