Amritsar, May 19

In the shadowy hours before dawn on May 8, Pakistan launched what officials describe as a “massive air assault” involving drones and long-range missiles—one that reportedly aimed to strike at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding of the Indian Army’s 15 Infantry Division, confirmed the attempted attack and said the sacred site was protected by a “holistic air defence umbrella,” which had been strengthened in anticipation of such an escalation.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Seshadri said Indian forces were on high alert after intelligence suggested that Pakistan, lacking legitimate military targets, might turn its attention to civilian infrastructure and religious landmarks. “Of these,” he said, “the Golden Temple appeared to be the most prominent.”

The Army had, according to Seshadri, deployed advanced air defence systems around the shrine in the days leading up to the attack. “Our brave and alert air defence gunners successfully neutralised all incoming drones and missiles,” he said. “Not a scratch was allowed to touch the Golden Temple.”
