Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India is developing its own large language Model and fostering public-private partnerships to support startups and researchers. “India is ready to share its expertise to ensure AI benefits all,” Prime Minister Modi said.

emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI), saying, “We are at the dawn of the AI age that will shape the course of humanity.” Speaking at a summit co-chaired with French President Emmanuel Macron, he underscored the need for responsible AI governance to ensure inclusivity and trust.

Modi highlighted AI’s potential to revolutionize healthcare, education, and agriculture but cautioned against biases in training data. “AI can explain medical reports in simple terms but may still struggle with basic diversity, like recognizing left-handed writing,” he noted.

Stressing AI’s rapid development and cross-border interdependence, Modi called for collective global efforts to establish governance standards that promote innovation while addressing risks such as cybersecurity, disinformation, and deepfakes.

He emphasized the need to democratize AI, build unbiased datasets, and ensure access for the Global South. “AI should serve all, especially where resources like compute power, talent, and data are lacking,” he said.

Addressing concerns over AI-driven job losses, Modi argued that technological shifts create new opportunities rather than eliminating work. He urged investments in skilling and re-skilling to prepare the workforce for an AI-driven future.

On sustainability, he highlighted AI’s high energy demands and called for green energy solutions, citing India’s collaboration with France in the International Solar Alliance. He also stressed the need for efficient AI models that minimize resource consumption.

Modi pointed to India’s success in building Digital Public Infrastructure for 1.4 billion people, leveraging an open and accessible network for governance and economic reforms. He said India’s National AI Mission is rooted in ethical AI principles, as reflected in the G20 consensus on “Harnessing AI Responsibly, for Good, and for All.”
