The global release of “In Her Defence: Ten Landmark Judgments on Women in the Armed Forces” book was celebrated today at Chandigarh’s iconic bookstore, The Browser, in Sector 8. Edited by High Court lawyer Navdeep Singh and public policy specialist Shivani Dasmahapatra, the book highlights transformative judicial decisions that have redefined the role of women in India’s armed forces.
Former Army Chief General VP Malik graced the event as Guest of Honour, while the discussion was moderated by Lt Gen KJS ‘Tiny’ Dhillon. The editors described the book as a “cornerstone and embodiment of the judiciary’s unwavering dedication to upholding the principles of equality and justice.”
The anthology, published by Penguin Random House, translates complex constitutional court rulings into layperson-friendly narratives, contributed by jurists, judges, and academics. It illuminates the struggles and victories that paved the way for greater gender equality in the uniformed services.
Recently, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma lauded the book on Instagram, calling it “a tribute to the strength of women” and “incredible work.”
Navdeep Singh, one of the editors, brings unparalleled expertise to the project. A practicing lawyer at the Punjab and Haryana High Court and a decorated former Territorial Army officer, Singh has worked extensively on constitutional matters, gender discrimination, and disability rights within the defence services.
Co-editor Shivani Dasmahapatra, a Gurgaon-based public policy and communications expert, has a rich background in journalism, consulting, and military history. Her foundation, Lest We Forget India, supports the families of armed forces personnel and preserves stories of sacrifice and service. The book’s foreword is penned by Major Priya Jhingan, the first woman to join the Indian Army’s Officer Training Academy as “Lady Cadet-1,” while messages from luminaries like General VP Malik, journalist Barkha Dutt, and Justice Elizabeth Rocha of Brazil add global perspectives.
“In Her Defence” stands as a testament to the power of legal reform in fostering inclusivity and breaking gender barriers in India’s armed forces. Its release marks a significant milestone in chronicling the journey of women in uniform, inspiring both legal practitioners and the next generation of women leaders.
