Himachal Pradesh’s newly appointed Acting Chief Secretary, Sanjay Gupta, has directed officials to clear departmental files within two days, sending out a strict message of discipline soon after taking charge. Speaking to reporters after his first meeting with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Gupta said delays in decision-making would no longer be tolerated. “No file in any department will remain pending for more than two days,” he said.

He also instructed that senior officers, including secretaries and directors, must inform the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and concerned ministers if they travel outside the city.

Gupta emphasised punctuality and accountability in government offices, noting that officials must arrive on time and ensure timely disposal of work. The move, he said, was aimed at improving efficiency and public trust in governance.

The Chief Secretary acknowledged the state’s financial challenges but assured that corrective measures would be taken soon. He added that during his tenure, all departments must adopt strict financial discipline.

According to Mr Gupta, the meeting with the Chief Minister identified seven key priorities for the government, which will remain the focus in the coming months. Drawing on his long administrative career and his experience as chairman of the State Electricity Board, he said he would use his expertise to support the state’s progress.
