Laxman Utekar’s historical drama Chhaava has stormed the box office since its release on 14 February 2025, drawing audiences with its sweeping portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. Starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, the film delves into the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj’s son as he takes on the Mughal dynasty while striving to uphold his father’s vision of Swarajya, the news outlet Indian Today reported.
Kaushal delivers a powerful, if not flawless, performance, embodying the warrior-king’s spirit with commanding intensity. Yet, it is Akshaye Khanna’s turn as the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb that has left the deepest impression. His portrayal is menacingly restrained, relying more on chilling expressions than thunderous battle cries.
Rashmika Mandanna, playing Maharani Yesubai, enjoys more agency than is often afforded to queens in films centred on kings, yet her role remains somewhat underwhelming. Meanwhile, Divya Dutta as Rajmata and Neil Bhoopalam as Aurangzeb’s son, Mirza Akbar, make an impact despite their limited screen time, The Indian Express reported.
The film has reignited interest in Sambhaji Maharaj’s contributions to Maharashtra’s history, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commending Chhaava for staying true to historical facts. While Maharashtra scrapped its entertainment tax in 2017, Fadnavis assured that the state would explore additional measures to support the film.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has formally appealed to the Chief Minister to grant Chhaava tax-free status, citing its emphasis on sacrifice, bravery, and duty. In its statement, FWICE underscored the film’s impact on younger audiences, asserting that the tale of Sambhaji Maharaj should be shared widely.
“The legacy and courage of this great Maratha king must be preserved for future generations,” FWICE said, adding that the film aligns with the government’s philosophy of ‘Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah.’ The organization has urged officials to ensure the story transcends Maharashtra, bringing Sambhaji’s heroic saga to a national audience.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised Chhaava, stating that it stays true to historical facts. While the state removed its entertainment tax in 2017, he assured that the government would explore further ways to promote the film.
