A Chattogram court in Bangladesh on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. The decision came after a 30-minute hearing under heavy security, with Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam ruling against the request. The Daily Star reported that the prosecution, represented by Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan, argued against bail.
Following the ruling, Das’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, indicated plans to appeal the decision to the High Court. Around 11:40 am, Bhattacharjee and 11 other lawyers, traveling in two microbuses under police escort, left the court premises, the news outlet added.
Despite arriving at the court at 10:15 am for the hearing, Chinmoy Krishna Das was not presented before the court. Das, who leads the Sammilita Sanatani Jote, was arrested near Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in November last year.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had expressed concern over Das’s arrest, highlighting ongoing attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Earlier the MEA condemned acts of violence, including arson, looting, and temple desecrations, urging Bangladesh to safeguard minority communities and ensure justice for victims.
