Wearing masks has been made mandatory across all hospitals in Himachal Pradesh, following the detection of a fresh Covid-19 case in the state and growing concerns over a nationwide rise in infections.

The state health department issued an advisory requiring both patients and their attendants to wear masks within hospital premises. Particular emphasis was placed on protecting vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with serious underlying health conditions, who are urged to take extra precautions by wearing masks at all times and avoiding crowded areas.

The guidance also stresses the importance of maintaining social distancing in public spaces to curb the spread of the virus.

At Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla — Himachal Pradesh’s largest government hospital — officials have made extensive preparations to handle a potential surge in Covid cases. A temporary ward with 150 oxygen-equipped beds has been established to accommodate patients needing respiratory support.

“All necessary measures have been put in place according to directives from the health department. We advise anyone experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever or cold to seek immediate medical attention to enable timely treatment and prevent further transmission,” said Dr Praveen S. Bhatia, Deputy Medical Superintendent at IGMC.
He added that the hospital is well-stocked with testing kits, essential medicines, and staffed with a dedicated team of doctors available around the clock.

The state health department has also instructed all chief medical officers, medical college principals, and hospital directors to remain vigilant and closely monitor developments.

Last week, the department issued orders to ensure the operational readiness of oxygen plants, availability of testing kits, and reinforcement of intensive care facilities across hospitals.
