Himachal Pradesh has received approval for 294 new roads under the fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV), with a total budget allocation of ₹2,271 crore for the construction of about 1,538 kilometres of road network. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh said the state’s hilly terrain had been taken into account, and the Union government had given special permission for the repair of PMGSY-I roads along with the new PMGSY-IV works.
He urged residents to transfer private land to the department through gift deeds in areas where road construction crosses private holdings, particularly in hill and tribal regions, to ensure timely project completion. He added that while road tarring is underway across the state, complaints over poor construction quality have emerged. To address this, a committee headed by the department secretary has been formed and will submit a report within a week. “Strict action will be taken wherever negligence is found,” he said.
The minister noted that the state still faces challenges in recovering from disaster-related losses estimated at ₹4,000 crore. Road networks in Bharmaur, Aut, Luhri, and Sainj were among the worst affected. He further said that although the Centre had not yet released ₹1,500 crore in assistance, the state government continues restoration work independently.
“About 50 roads remain closed, and our teams are working to fully restore them soon,” he said, adding that illegal dumping activities will now face firm penalties.
On respecting local beliefs, the minister said, “Development is necessary, but it must go hand in hand with respect for local deities and traditions to avoid disputes in the future.” Addressing concerns over pending contractor payments, he said some payments had been cleared, and others delayed due to treasury constraints would be released shortly.
