The Himachal Pradesh government has rolled back its decision to increase entry tax on certain passenger vehicles, hours before the revised rates were due to come into effect.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced in the state assembly in Shimla that the proposed hike for five-seater vehicles and vehicles with six to 12 seats had been withdrawn.

Under the revised decision, the earlier rates will continue to apply, with five-seater vehicles charged ₹70 and six to 12-seater vehicles charged ₹110.

The government had earlier proposed increasing the rates to ₹170 for five-seater vehicles and ₹130 for vehicles in the six to 12-seater category.

Sukhu also said he had tried to speak to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the issue, but the call was not answered. He added that he had discussed the matter with Punjab Congress leaders Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa, and insisted that the government would not place any additional burden on transporters or the public.
