Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday alleged that Haryana is on the verge of a “financial emergency”, claiming that the state’s debt has surged by 456 per cent over the past 12 years under the BJP government.

He said the total debt, which stood at Rs 70,925 crore in 2014 when the BJP came to power, is projected to touch nearly Rs 4 lakh crore by 2026-27, marking an increase of around Rs 3.23 lakh crore.

Targeting the budget presented by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for 2026-27, Surjewala termed it a “facade of deception and deceit” and accused the government of borrowing heavily to repay old loans.

He claimed that in 2025-26, the state took loans worth about Rs 98,000 crore, of which Rs 64,042 crore was used to service previous debt, alleging that the actual borrowing figures were masked in the budget documents.

The Congress leader further alleged that several welfare schemes have faced major cuts in the new budget, including old age pensions, assistance for widows, persons with disabilities, and other social security programmes.

He also questioned the allocation under the Lado Lakshmi Scheme, claiming that only a fraction of the previously announced funds were disbursed, and accused the government of making inflated announcements without adequate implementation.
