The Punjab Government on Friday gave a hero’s welcome to World Champion cricketers Harleen Deol and Amanjot Kaur at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali, celebrating their historic victory as part of India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup–winning team.

The two players were greeted with drums, flower garlands, and loud cheers from fans as senior state leaders, including Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, and MLA Dr. Amandeep Kaur Arora, led the official reception on behalf of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Also present were District Planning Board Chairperson Prabhjot Kaur, Jaswant Kaur, and Councillor Sarbjeet Singh Samana, along with district officials and sports enthusiasts. The airport resonated with dhol beats and celebrations as Punjab’s sporting pride returned home.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “Our daughters have made Punjab and the entire country proud. The Chief Minister will soon honour Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, and Amanjot Kaur for this historic achievement.” He added that under Punjab’s new sports policy, the government is providing cash rewards and government jobs to players, aiming to restore the state’s reputation as a national sports powerhouse.

MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said the victory would inspire a new era in women’s cricket. “This triumph shows that world-class talent is emerging from Punjab’s towns and villages — from Shubman Gill and Harmanpreet Kaur to Arshdeep Singh, Harleen Deol, and Amanjot Kaur,” he said.

Expressing their gratitude, Harleen Deol and Amanjot Kaur thanked the Punjab Government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for recognising sportspersons’ achievements. They said the grand welcome had strengthened their resolve to perform even better. Both urged parents to support their daughters in pursuing sports and careers with confidence.

The celebration culminated in a victory procession through the streets of Mohali, where both players waved to cheering crowds from open jeeps as petals rained down. Among those present were Amanjot Kaur’s family members — father Bhupinder Singh, grandfather Ishar Singh, sister Kamaljot, and coach Nagesh Gupta — as well as Harleen Deol’s parents B.S. Deol and Charanjit Kaur, and her brother Manjot Singh.

The event was also attended by Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, Dronacharya Awardee Jiwanjot Singh Teja, and District Sports Officer Rupesh Kumar Begra, alongside a large gathering of admirers and young athletes who joined in honouring Punjab’s new cricket icons.
