Punjab’s Finance Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, has unveiled a landmark initiative to overhaul urban streets in the state, beginning with Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar. The first phase of the project, covering 42 kilometres, will cost over Rs 140 crore and aims to modernise infrastructure, improve traffic flow, and enhance public spaces.

Speaking at Punjab Bhawan, Cheema highlighted that the scheme represents a historic first for the state and will be expanded based on its impact and public feedback. The plan includes four core upgrades: eliminating traffic bottlenecks, ensuring uniform road width, improving drainage, and constructing accessible footpaths. The project also incorporates realigning essential services such as streetlights, bus stands, and water supply lines. Notably, contractors will be responsible for maintaining the roads for ten years, ensuring accountability and longevity.

The initiative will roll out in three phases. The first will involve a four-month design period with input from top urban planners and international experts. An eight-month construction phase will follow, adhering to global standards. The final phase will focus on long-term upkeep, including mechanised street cleaning.

In Amritsar, 17.5 kilometres of key roads will be revamped, including Majitha Road, Court Road, and Race Course Road. Ludhiana’s project spans 12.4 kilometres, covering major routes like Old GT Road and Ghumar Mandi. Jalandhar will see improvements along 12.3 kilometres, including HMV Road and Pathankot Road.

Cheema criticised previous SAD-BJP and Congress governments for neglecting Punjab’s urban infrastructure, despite the state’s wealth of skilled engineers and architects. He asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party-led administration is committed to transforming city streets to world-class standards, setting a benchmark for urban development in India.
