The government is expected to introduce an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, following his indictment by a Supreme Court in-house inquiry, Indian media report.

A three-judge panel, set up by the Supreme Court, reportedly found bundles of cash at Justice Varma’s New Delhi home after a fire broke out around the Hindu festival of Holi on 14 March, according to Mint. Subsequently, the Supreme Court transferred him from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court, but he has not been assigned work.

Sources cited by NDTV say the motion could be brought forward in the monsoon session beginning in the second half of July if Justice Varma does not resign voluntarily. The in-house committee’s report remains confidential, but former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is said to have recommended impeachment proceedings to the President and the Prime Minister.

Justice Varma has denied any connection to the cash discovered at his residence and has so far refused to step down.
