The Centre has approved defence procurement proposals worth about ₹79,000 crore ($9.5bn) to strengthen the operational capabilities of its armed forces, the government said on Monday. The approvals were granted by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during a meeting held in New Delhi.
For the Indian Army, the council cleared the purchase of loiter munition systems, low-level lightweight radars, long-range guided rocket ammunition for the Pinaka multiple launch rocket system, and an upgraded Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (Mk-II).
Officials said the loiter munitions would enable precision strikes against tactical targets, while the radars would help detect and track small, low-flying drones. The extended-range guided rockets are expected to improve the accuracy and reach of the Pinaka system, enhancing its ability to hit high-value targets. The upgraded drone detection system will be used to protect key military assets in both forward areas and hinterland locations.
For the Indian Navy, approval was granted for the procurement of bollard pull tugs, high-frequency software-defined radios, and the leasing of high-altitude long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft systems. The navy said the tugs would assist ships and submarines in manoeuvring within harbours, while the radios would strengthen secure long-range communications during operations. The leased drones are expected to provide continuous intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, improving maritime domain awareness across the Indian Ocean region.
The Indian Air Force also received clearance for several systems, including an automatic take-off and landing recording system, Astra Mk-II air-to-air missiles, full mission simulators and SPICE-1000 long-range guidance kits. The defence ministry said these acquisitions would enhance flight safety, pilot training and the air force’s ability to engage adversary aircraft from extended stand-off ranges.
The government said the approvals reflect its focus on modernising the armed forces amid evolving security challenges.
