Four operatives of the foreign-based Kishan Gang have been arrested in connection with the murder of Shiromani Akali Dal councillor Harjinder Singh, who was shot dead in Amritsar’s Chehertha area on Sunday, police said. Harjinder Singh was a municipal councillor representing Ward No. 2 under the Jandiala Assembly constituency. His killing has been described as part of a growing wave of gang-related violence in Punjab.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the arrests were made within eight hours of the incident. “In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has dismantled an organised crime module linked to the foreign-based Kishan Gang,” he wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
One of the accused, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, allegedly opened fire on police during a chase near Fatahpur. Police say the SHO of Chehertha police station returned fire in self-defence, injuring Gopi in the leg. He was taken to the Civil Hospital in Amritsar and remains under medical care. The police recovered a Glock 9mm pistol from the accused. The police officials say the operation is part of an ongoing crackdown on gang rivalry and organised crime in the state.
Investigations are continuing to trace the network’s wider links. “Efforts are underway to identify more associates and to map the gang’s backward and forward linkages,” said DGP Yadav.
