A former MP and grandson of ex-Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has been sentenced to life imprisonment for rape by a special court in Karnataka. Prajwal Revanna, who represented the Hassan constituency and was a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent general elections, was convicted of repeatedly raping a woman and filming the acts without her consent.
The Special Court for criminal cases involving MPs and MLAs found Revanna guilty on multiple counts under the Indian Penal Code, including rape, assault with intent to disrobe, voyeurism, and criminal intimidation. He was sentenced to life under Sections 376(2)(k) and 376(2)(n) — which relate to rape committed while in a position of authority and repeated rape of the same victim. The court also ordered him to pay ₹11 lakh in total fines, with the full amount to be given as compensation to the survivor.
Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat also sentenced him to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment under Section 354(b), two years under Section 354(c) for voyeurism, and another two years under Section 506 for criminal intimidation. The case surfaced shortly before the national elections earlier this year, after a pen drive allegedly containing explicit videos linked to Revanna was circulated. The woman accused him of sexually assaulting her on two occasions and recording the incidents. Revanna denied the allegations and claimed the videos were doctored. He also lodged a police complaint stating that the footage had been morphed.
The complaint against him was originally filed at the Cyber Crime Station of Karnataka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which conducted the probe.
Revanna’s conviction comes amid growing scrutiny of criminal charges against elected officials in India. The case has also sparked wider political debates, given his ties to the powerful Deve Gowda family.
