Former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala Dies at 89

Om Prakash Chautala, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), passed away on Friday at the age of 89. Chautala, who was the son of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, suffered a cardiac arrest at his Gurugram home and was rushed to a hospital, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

Chautala served as the Chief Minister of Haryana in multiple terms: from December 2, 1989, to May 22, 1990; from July 1, 1990, to July 17, 1990; again from March 22, 1991, to April 6, 1991; and finally from July 24, 1999, to March 5, 2005.

Chautala is survived by his two sons, Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala. Abhay, a former member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly, represented the Ellenabad constituency. Chautala’s grandson, Dushyant Chautala, has also held political prominence, serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana in a previous BJP-led government.
