Fauja Singh, oldest marathon runner, dies at 114 in road accident

Fauja Singh, the world-renowned marathon runner who inspired millions by competing well past his centenary, has died at the age of 114 after being hit by a car in Punjab.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway, near his native village of Beyas in Jalandhar district. He was walking along the roadside when he was hit by a vehicle. He sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital, but doctors confirmed his death at 7:30pm.

Born on 1 April 1911, he became a global sporting icon after taking up distance running in his 80s.
