Maharashtra’s caretaker Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Wednesday expressed his readiness to accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision regarding the Chief Minister selection for the Mahayuti alliance. “I have told the Prime Minister that if there is any problem in forming the government in Maharashtra because of me, then whatever decision you take, I accept it,” Shinde said. He added that he would not be an obstacle and would stand by any decision made by Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah, both of whom he praised for their support during his tenure.
Shinde’s resignation on Tuesday paved the way for BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to assume the top post, following the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s landslide win in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections. The BJP secured 132 of the 148 seats it contested, while its ally Shiv Sena won 57. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a major defeat.
Shinde, Fadnavis, and NCP leader Ajit Pawar met Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan to tender Shinde’s resignation. The Governor has asked Shinde to continue as caretaker CM until a new appointment is made.
