Election Commission of India has begun preparations to elect the next Vice President, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose departure was officially notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 22. In a press note issued on Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) confirmed it had initiated the procedural groundwork for the Vice-Presidential election, as mandated under Article 324 of the Constitution.
The Vice-President’s election is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and accompanying rules of 1974. Officials said the schedule for polling will be announced following the completion of key preparatory activities.
These include the preparation of the Electoral College, comprising elected and nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha; the appointment of Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers; and the compilation and circulation of background material on past Vice-Presidential elections.
The ECI did not give a specific date for the vote but assured that the timeline would be made public “as soon as possible.”
