Maha Kumbh Mela: Over 3.5 crore devotees take dip on first ‘Amrit Snan’

The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj witnessed a massive turnout on its third day as thousands of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. The event reached its spiritual zenith on Makar Sankranti (January 14)with over 3.5 crore participants engaging in the first ‘Amrit Snan’ by 5:30 pm.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the gathering as a symbol of faith and cultural unity in a social media post. The Mela also drew international visitors from countries such as the United States, France, Israel, Iran, and Portugal, many of whom were deeply touched by Indian culture and spirituality. To ensure smooth operations and safety, the administration deployed over 50,000 security personnel, including police and paramilitary forces. ‘Ganga Seva Doots’ were stationed along the ghats to maintain cleanliness, removing offerings and waste from the river promptly.
This year’s Mela featured the integration of Assam’s traditional Bhogali Bihu festival, celebrated with traditional dances, hymns, and rice-based delicacies by Assamese saints and devotees. Cultural programmes showcasing traditional music and dances from across India further enriched the event, emphasizing the country’s rich diversity.
Facilities such as free medical services, clean drinking water, and transportation were provided for the convenience of attendees. The grandeur and global participation of the event highlighted India’s cultural heritage on an international stage, enhancing the country’s image worldwide.
