New Delhi, April 11

The Delhi government has proposed a complete exemption from road tax and registration charges for electric cars priced up to Rs 30 lakh in its new draft Electric Vehicle Policy 2026 to 2030. The benefit will remain in effect till March 31, 2030, subject to formal notification.

According to the draft policy released by the transport department on Saturday, strong hybrid vehicles are proposed to receive a 50 per cent waiver on applicable charges. However, electric cars priced above Rs 30 lakh will not be eligible for any concessions on road tax or registration fees.

The draft policy also states that from January 1, 2027, only electric three-wheelers will be allowed for new registration in the capital. Officials said the move aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, improve air quality and build a sustainable transport ecosystem.

The government has invited public comments and suggestions on the draft policy over the next 30 days. The policy will come into force upon formal notification.

The Electric Vehicle Policy was first introduced in August 2020 as a key initiative to reduce vehicular emissions and encourage the transition to electric mobility. Initially rolled out for three years, the policy period ended in August 2023 and has been extended several times since then.

The proposed framework aims to strengthen clean mobility, provide long-term incentives for both buyers and manufacturers, and encourage greener transportation choices across the national capital.
