Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that India’s top political leaders will now face a new anti-corruption law, which he described as a “landmark step” in ensuring accountability. Speaking at a rally in Gaya of Bihar on Friday, Modi said the legislation covers the prime minister, chief ministers and ministers. Under its provisions, leaders arrested on serious criminal charges must secure bail within 30 days or vacate office on the 31st day.

Modi said the law removes what he called an unfair disparity with government employees, who automatically lose their jobs if jailed for more than 50 hours. “But a CM, a minister, or even a PM can enjoy staying in government even from jail,” he said.

The prime minister also unveiled several development projects for Bihar in sectors including healthcare, energy and housing. Among them is a new cancer hospital and research centre. He noted that over 4 crore homes have been built nationwide under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the past 11 years, including 38 lakh in Bihar, calling them “symbols of dignity” equipped with basic amenities.

Turning to national security, Modi referred to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and missile launches from Pakistan. He said India intercepted and destroyed the incoming missiles, describing Operation Sindoor as a major shift in the country’s defence posture. “Even if terrorists hide in the depths of the earth, India’s missiles will bury them there,” he declared. He also criticised opposition parties for using Bihar as a “vote bank” and recalled what he called the failures of the “lantern regime”, when Maoist violence and poor infrastructure held the state back. He said Bihar is now on a path of “comprehensive development”.
