Barnala, October 11
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday called on young people to direct their energy towards building a stronger state and nation, describing Barnala as the “Literature Capital of Punjab.” Speaking at a Regional Youth Festival at SD College, Mann urged students to take inspiration from revolutionary icons such as Shaheed Bhagat Singh and other martyrs who devoted their lives to India’s freedom. He said their ideals offer a moral compass for the next generation, adding that the state government is taking “unprecedented steps” to create opportunities for the youth.
Mann said initiatives to provide jobs and platforms for personal growth were central to his administration’s agenda. “Just as runways enable aircraft to take off smoothly, the state government is ensuring that our youth get the right support to fulfil their dreams,” he said.
He appealed to young people to remain humble despite success, encouraging them to cultivate confidence and a positive approach without arrogance. Recalling his own college days, Mann said youth festivals played a crucial role in his development as both an artist and a politician.
Mann also highlighted Barnala’s cultural significance, noting that literary figures such as Sant Ram Udasi, Ram Sarup Ankhi, Om Parkash Gasso, Balwant Gargi, Sewa Singh Thikriwala, and Megh Raj Mittar hail from the district. Their legacy, he said, has earned Barnala its reputation as a literary hub.
The Chief Minister also commended SD College for nurturing students who have excelled globally and expressed hope the institution would continue to provide quality education and shape future leaders.
