Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended his greetings to wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists on International Cheetah Day, praising India’s progress in protecting the species under Project Cheetah. In a message posted on X, Modi said the initiative, launched three years ago, aimed not only to safeguard the cheetah but also to revive the country’s ecological heritage and strengthen biodiversity.
India now hosts several cheetahs, including those born on its soil, with many thriving in Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The Prime Minister said the rise of “cheetah tourism” reflected growing public interest in conservation and encouraged global visitors to witness the animals in their natural habitat. Modi also credited the country’s “Cheetah Mitras” and wider community support for the project’s progress, saying that protecting wildlife and living in harmony with nature had long been central to India’s cultural values.
