The Centre government is set to introduce the “One Nation, One Election” Bill in the Lok Sabha today, marking a significant step towards synchronizing elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will present the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill. The BJP has issued a three-line whip, urging its Lok Sabha members to attend the session.
Approved by the Union Cabinet on Thursday, the Bill proposes holding local body elections within 100 days of national and state polls. It will be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further examination, as outlined in a report by a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the initiative, emphasizing the cost-cutting and governance benefits. “The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections,” he said. The Bill is being positioned as a transformative electoral reform to streamline India’s polling schedule and enhance administrative efficiency.
