The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR against former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa, his wife and former minister Razia Sultana, and other family members in connection with the alleged murder of their son, Aqil Akhter. Aqil, who lived in Sector 4 near Mansa Devi Mandir in Panchkula, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on October 16. The CBI has also named his wife and sister as accused in the case.

According to the agency, there had been deep-rooted discord within the family. On 27 August, Aqil had posted a video on social media accusing his father of having an illicit relationship with his wife. In the video, he also alleged that his mother, sister, and other family members were conspiring to kill him or frame him in a false case.

The Haryana government had earlier transferred the probe this case registered at Mansa Devi Complex Police Station in Panchkula — to the CBI. The agency has now re-registered the case under Sections 103(1) and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and taken over the investigation.

Previously, Mohammad Mustafa and his family have denied all allegations, telling reporters that Aqil had a history of drug abuse and psychological distress.
