The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal to submit India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Cabinet also cleared the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement, along with guarantees from relevant ministries and departments. If the bid is successful, the Gujarat government will receive the required grant-in-aid to prepare for the event.

Athletes from 72 countries are expected to compete in the Games. The event would also draw thousands of coaches, officials, media personnel and tourists, offering a boost to local businesses and revenue. Ahmedabad has been chosen as the proposed host city, with the Narendra Modi Stadium — the world’s largest cricket venue — already having demonstrated its capability during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final.

Officials said hosting the Games would provide long-term benefits, including growth in tourism, job creation, and opportunities in sports science, logistics, broadcasting, IT, communications and event management.

The government added that hosting such a global sporting event would foster national pride, inspire future athletes, and encourage greater participation in sports across all levels in India.
