The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the one-time special package on Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizer beyond the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) of Rs 3,500 per metric tonne. The package will remain effective from 1 January 2025 until further notice, with an estimated financial implication of Rs 3,850 crore. This initiative aims to ensure the sustainable availability of DAP at affordable prices for farmers amid global market volatility. Since April 2024, the total allocation for the special package has exceeded Rs 6,475 crore.
Under the NBS scheme, operational since 2010, 28 grades of phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers are made available to farmers at subsidized rates through manufacturers and importers. The government has prioritized farmer welfare, maintaining steady DAP prices despite geopolitical and market challenges, ensuring smooth availability for the Kharif and Rabi 2024-25 seasons.
