The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) in districts without such schools, as part of the Central Sector Scheme.

The total estimated cost for setting up the 28 NVs is Rs. 2,359.82 crore, covering both capital expenditure (Rs. 1,944.19 crore) and operational costs (Rs. 415.63 crore) over the next five years (2024-2029). Each school, with a capacity of 560 students, will directly benefit 15,680 students, and will also generate permanent employment for 1,316 individuals.

The project will create a range of local job opportunities, from skilled construction labor to service providers for essential school supplies and services. The NVs are residential, co-educational schools offering quality education from Class VI to XII, primarily for talented rural students, irrespective of their socio-economic background.

Currently, there are 661 sanctioned NVs across the country, with 653 operational. Under the National Education Policy 2020, nearly all NVs have been designated as PM Shri schools, setting benchmarks for quality education. The schools have seen a growing enrollment of girls, as well as students from SC, ST, and OBC backgrounds. NV students consistently outperform in board exams and excel in fields such as engineering, medicine, and civil services.
