Chandigarh, October 8

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on track to make history by winning the Haryana assembly elections for the third consecutive time, according to early polling trends from the Election Commission of India. The BJP is currently leading in 51 seats, while Congress is ahead in 34. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is leading in 1 seat, with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and independents heading in 1 and 3 seats, respectively.

Since Haryana’s formation in 1966, no party has achieved a third consecutive term in the state. Currently, Om Prakash Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), once a major political force, is leading in three seats. In contrast, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), led by Dushyant Chautala and previously aligned with the BJP in 2019, has not yet secured any seats in this election.

Voter turnout for the elections held on October 8 has reached 67.9% across the 90 assembly constituencies, showing a notable increase compared to the 64.8% turnout in the last Lok Sabha elections. The current turnout is close to the 68.3% recorded in the 2019 assembly elections. Rural voters have shown significant engagement, while the troubling trend of urban apathy persists, with many urban constituencies reporting turnout rates that are 10% below the state average.
