The Assembly Elections in Haryana will be held in a single phase on October 1, while Jammu and Kashmir will have a three-phase election, with the first phase on September 18, the second on September 25, and the final phase on October 1, Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, announced on Friday. The results of both the states will be declared on October 4, he added.   However, the ECI did not announce dates for the Maharashtra assembly polls, which were previously held alongside Haryana’s elections.

Haryana is divided into 22 districts, comprising a total of 90 Assembly seats. Out of these, 73 seats are designated as general, while 17 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). The state has no reserved seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST). According to the Election Commission of India, Haryana’s voter base is approximately 20.1 million people, including 10.6 million male voters and 9.5 million female voters. The state also has a substantial number of young voters, with around 4.1 million individuals aged 20-29. In addition, there are approximately 452,000 first-time voters, 150,000 persons with disabilities (PwDs), 10,321 centenarians, 255 voters above the age of 85, and 459 third-gender voters.

Post delimitation, Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly has 90 seats, with 43 in the Jammu region and 47 in Kashmir. Of the 90 seats, 74 are general seats, nine are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, and seven for Scheduled Tribes. The Union Territory has 87.09 lakh registered voters, including 44.46 lakh men and 42.62 lakh women, with the final electoral roll to be published on August 20.

In Haryana, the state assembly’s term ends on November 3. The upcoming assembly polls will take place shortly after the ruling BJP, which has governed the state since 2014, and the Opposition Congress each secured five Lok Sabha seats. The BJP led in 44 assembly segments, while the Congress-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance led in 46 across 10 parliamentary constituencies. AAP has declared it will contest the assembly polls independently in Haryana.
