Dergaon(Assam), March 15
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Assam, once associated with insurgency and unrest, is now on a path of economic transformation, with efforts underway to establish a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor industry in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon on Saturday, Shah said the institution would become the country’s premier police training centre within five years. He praised Assam’s historical warrior, Lachit Barphukan, whose legacy had been confined to the state but is now nationally recognized due to efforts by the Modi government. His biography has been translated into 23 languages and is now available in libraries across India.
Shah said the academy, developed in three phases at a cost of ₹1,050 crore, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Previously, Assam’s police had to train in other states, but over the past eight years, the state has hosted 2,000 personnel from Goa and Manipur for training.
The home minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for Assam’s development, highlighting a series of peace agreements—including the Assam-Bodoland, Karbi Anglong, and ULFA accords—that have led more than 10,000 former insurgents to lay down their weapons.
Shah also pointed to significant investments, including MoUs worth ₹5.18 lakh crore signed at the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 conference, with infrastructure projects worth ₹3 lakh crore in the pipeline. He said these initiatives would create substantial employment opportunities in the state.
Comparing the state’s financial situation under previous governments, Shah claimed that devolution grants and aid had quadrupled under Modi, rising from ₹1.27 lakh crore to ₹4.95 lakh crore over a decade. He accused past administrations of neglecting Assam’s development and failing to maintain peace.
Highlighting major projects, Shah cited the Bharat Mala road network worth ₹10,000 crore, the ₹3,000 crore Dhubri-Phulwari bridge, and rural road projects spanning 3,700 km at a cost of ₹3,400 crore. He also announced a six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra, an expanded airport named after Gopinath Ji, new medical colleges, and a ₹1,000 crore AIIMS project.
Shah concluded by emphasizing that Assam is now on a path of progress, peace, and industrial expansion under the Modi government’s vision.
