Punjab police have seized 30kg of heroin in one of the biggest drug busts of the year, as part of an intensified crackdown on narcotics. The operation led to the arrest of an alleged cross-border smuggler and the recovery of a consignment suspected to have been trafficked through a drone from Pakistan, officials said on Friday. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the arrested suspect, identified as Gursimranjit Singh, alias Simran, a resident of Baserke Gillan in Amritsar’s Gharinda area, was caught with the drugs concealed in his Ford Fiesta car. Yadav said the investigation suggests Singh was a key link in a wider smuggling network and had recently received a large heroin shipment from across the border. “Pakistani-based smugglers are suspected to have used drones to deliver the contraband. Further inquiries are ongoing to dismantle the entire network,” he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charanjit Singh, who led the operation, said Amritsar Rural Police acted on intelligence reports about Singh’s involvement in narcotics trafficking. Officers stopped his vehicle at a checkpoint in Gharinda and, upon searching a black bag inside the car, discovered four packets of heroin, each weighing 7.5kg. “The accused is being interrogated to identify other individuals linked to this network. More arrests are expected,” the SSP said.

A case has been registered under sections 21(c) and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Gharinda police station in Amritsar Rural district.
