Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Assam’s Chief Minister for a second consecutive term at a grand ceremony in Guwahati on Tuesday, marking the return of the BJP-led NDA government in the state. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office at the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara in the presence of several senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari attended the ceremony, along with BJP president Nitin Nabin and other senior party figures. The swearing-in follows a strong electoral performance by the NDA in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The alliance secured 102 seats, including 82 won by the BJP.

Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), won 10 seats each. Family members of Mr Sarma, including his mother Mrinalini Devi, wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma and children Nandil and Sukanya, were also present at the event. The new government will be the third successive NDA administration in Assam.
