Washington, April 24

Democratic leaders in the United States have criticized President Donald Trump for referring to India and some other countries in derogatory terms, accusing him of amplifying offensive content on social media and lowering the dignity of the presidency.

The criticism came after Trump reposted comments made by a radio host that included remarks about India in the context of a case before the US Supreme Court on birthright citizenship. The post triggered sharp reactions from Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said in a social media post that while Americans are facing serious challenges, the President is amplifying “racist trash” and treating the presidency like a reality television platform. They said the country needs leadership that reflects the seriousness of the moment.

Congressman Ro Khanna, addressing Vice President JD Vance, questioned whether he agreed with the President’s remarks about immigrants from countries such as India and China.

Congressman Ami Bera said the comments were offensive and showed a lack of understanding of the country’s identity. “The comments shared by President Trump are offensive, ignorant, and beneath the dignity of the office he holds,” he said. Bera added that immigrants have played a key role in building the United States and continue to strengthen the nation.

He said America’s growth has been shaped by people from across the world who worked to create better opportunities for future generations. “We are a nation of immigrants, and we are stronger because of it,” he said, adding that the remarks do not reflect the values of public service or the experiences of immigrant families.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also criticized the President’s remarks, calling them inappropriate and harmful. He said such statements not only insult Indian Americans but also risk affecting relations with important global partners and undermining the values of diversity and inclusion.

The Hindu American Foundation said it was deeply concerned over the sharing of such content, warning that it could contribute to rising hatred and put communities at risk. The organization urged the President to delete the post. The controversy has intensified political debate in the United States, with several leaders calling for restraint in public discourse and greater accountability from those holding public office.
