New Delhi, March 28
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, followed by a 6.8 magnitude aftershock, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor hit at 12.50pm local time, with its epicentre located 16km northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10km, according to media reports.
The quake sent tremors across Myanmar and parts of neighbouring Thailand, raising concerns over damage and casualties. Authorities are assessing the impact as emergency teams remain on alert.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the disaster, stating that India stands ready to assist Myanmar and Thailand. “Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, I have asked our authorities to be on standby and directed the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” Modi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
