The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, a major step aimed at transforming India’s sporting ecosystem and strengthening the country’s position on the global stage. The new policy replaces the National Sports Policy of 2001, marking a significant shift in India’s approach to sports development, athlete support, and talent identification. It sets out a long-term vision to position India as a sporting powerhouse, with an eye on the 2036 Olympic Games.
Sharing details about the government decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described it as a “major decision that paves the way for a new direction.” He added, “Prime Minister Modi has given special focus to sports, and this new policy will contribute to the holistic development of the sector.”
The government said that the NSP 2025 has been formulated following wide-ranging consultations involving Central Ministries, NITI Aayog, State Governments, National Sports Federations (NSFs), athletes, experts, and the general public. The policy is built on five key pillars, although full details of these are yet to be publicly released. The Cabinet said that the new policy aims not only to enhance India’s international performance but also to promote sports as a tool for inclusivity, fitness, and community empowerment across all regions and age groups.
The NSP 2025 is expected to introduce reforms in areas such as sports governance, infrastructure, grassroots participation, gender inclusion, and athlete welfare. It will also focus on encouraging private investment and creating new opportunities for partnerships at the state and national levels. Further implementation guidelines and rollout timelines are likely to be announced in the coming weeks.
